Pittsburgh Penguins practice and notes 11-08-2010

The Penguins were back on the practice ice today at Southpoint. According to the Pens official page, Brent Johnson did not participate and Malkin left early. Dan Byslma spoke with the media after practice and downplayed both. Malkin still has some discomfort in his knee and Johnson was sick. Nothing appears serious enough to cause either one to miss time.

Also according to the reports is that the Penguins worked hard on their defensive zone coverage today. There have been lapses all year despite the Pens only giving up 26.6 shots per game. They have given up tons of odd man breaks. Their defense has been aggressive in the offensive zone but frequently get trapped getting back. Goligoski played perhaps his worst game against Phoenix and Martin continues to make costly errors. The coverage has got to get better and hopefully this is a step in that direction.

After practice, several Penguins painted shoes that will be auctioned off for Max Talbots charity, The Max Talbot Foundation. The goal is to build an orphanage in Haiti.

Coach Tony Granato was not at practice today. He was excused so he could join his sister at the Hockey Hall of Fame. Cammi Granato and Angela James are the first women to join the exclusive club. Granato was one of the founding members of the US Olympic hockey team. She captained the US to gold in the 1998 games.

Michel Therrien's name has been flying around as a possible return to the NHL coaching ranks. There are rumors the Devils, Sabres, and the Flames are considering a change and Therrien would be in the mix.

Well, not a whole lot of news out there.  When I have more time I still plan on getting a few opinions out there on the goaltending and coaching situations. Stay tuned
